Robotic-assisted surgery is a new technology in knee replacement surgery. A robotic arm, which is still controlled by the surgeon, allows for more precise planning of the knee surgery and more accurate cutting of the bone. With traditional techniques, a knee replacement is often measured in 2–4-millimeter increments, whereas a robot can cut to an accuracy of less than half a millimeter. This promising technology allows the surgeon to plan and perform a knee replacement that very closely resembles the patient’s individual anatomy. The goal is to give the patient a knee that feels more natural while also allowing for a quicker recovery.
The surgeon creates a 3D model of your knee during the operation and then cuts the bone so that the new knee fits each patient’s unique anatomy. Whereas with traditional knee replacements, standard guides are used for every patient to make the patient’s bone fit the implant.
Robotic knee surgery allows us to make very small but important micro-adjustments to find a natural balance for each individual patient. By placing less stress on the patient’s knee this new technology can allow for less pain, less inflammation, and hopefully, a faster recovery with a knee that feels more natural.
